For 30 years, Cheryl Wilson wrote the garden column for the Gazette newspapers in western Massachusetts. Valley Gardens is a selection of 45 columns published from 2006-2015, the last 10 years of her garden writing career. Primarily interviews with local gardeners in the Connecticut River Valley, the book has sections on public gardens—both local and in the United States and England, private gardens featured in benefit tours for non-profit organizations, horticultural education opportunities such as the master gardener program, and the author’s favorite plants. The gardeners shared their successes and failures, their experiences with climate and weather issues as well as pesky critters, and their favorite sources of plants. At the end of each column in the book is an update reporting on the status of the garden or program since the publication of the original article.
