This compilation of short stories poems and essays is the result of my need to continue to write between my larger books as I wait to have them published. Two of the poems were previously published in my first book, Tale of Two Cabins, two of the essays were published in the Thoreau Society bulletin and one of the essays was presented at the Thoreau Society convention in 2018. The short stories and two poems have not been published before and were written between 2018 and 2020. All these have been scattered about my computer and I thought it about time to put them into book form.
—John Irving Clapp
“By means of stories, poems and essays John Clapp’s roving imagination explores nature and human nature. He takes us from rough characters, mean streets, and apocalyptic worlds to the peaceful precincts of Thoreau’s Walden. Reading these pages stretches the mind in unexpected ways, time well rewarded.”
—David K. Leff, author of Canoeing Maine’s Legendary Allagash: Thoreau, Romance and Survival of the Wild
